The Lynn Commuter Rail station on the Newburyport/Rockport Line is a key transportation hub for the City of Lynn and the MBTA bus system. We are planning significant improvements to the station’s structure, safety, functionality, and accessibility that will also reduce station maintenance costs.

In fall 2022, we closed the Lynn Commuter Rail station to address potential station deterioration issues. We began construction of the Lynn Interim station in September 2023 and completed the work in December 2023.

Building a Better T

As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.

Lynn Interim Station Now Open for Service

As of December 18, 2023, Newburyport/Rockport trains will stop at the new, accessible Lynn Interim station located on Ellis St and Friend St. The free shuttle bus from Lynn station to Swampscott station will no longer be in service.

  • Accessibility upgrades, including new stretcher-compliant elevators at both ends of the platform
  • New canopies over platforms
  • Track improvements
  • New stairs

Rider Benefits

  • Full accessibility
  • Improved functionality
  • Improved pedestrian circulation and wayfinding
  • Enhanced station and system safety features

What to Expect During This Work

Phase One of demolition is complete. Phase Two of demolition will begin in summer 2024. This will consist of removal of the station platform, canopy, and elevator north of Washington Street. Crews will be working from 9 PM to 5 AM Sunday through Thursday nights. The work zone extends from Washington Street to Central Square.

Due to the equipment required to perform this work, lights and moderate noise levels can be expected. Nighttime lane closures at Central Square will be required. These will be coordinated through the Lynn Police and Public Works Departments.
