Transportation Access Pass (TAP) CharlieCard
People with disabilities and Medicare cardholders are eligible for reduced MBTA fares with a Transportation Access Pass (TAP) CharlieCard.
TAP CharlieCards can be loaded with:
- Cash value for roughly 50% reduced one-way fares
- $10 7-Day LinkPasses
- $30 monthly LinkPasses
Your card can also be used to purchase reduced monthly passes for Commuter Rail, Ferry, and Express Bus.

Note: These cards cannot be used on The RIDE. RIDE customers enrolled in the income-eligible or Senior reduced fare programs can receive discounts on ADA/standard and Premium trips.

TAP Eligibility
Whether you’re applying online, by mail, or in person, you’ll need to show documentation of disability. You have three options:
Option 1: Show proof of disability. You can use any one of the following.

Option 2: Enter an active RIDE ID number. Your TAP card duration period lasts until your RIDE ID number expiration date.
Option 3: Upload the Health Care Professional Certification (HCPC) form, signed by a health care provider, to the online application. For people with health care professional-certified permanent disabilities, TAP card duration is five years. For health care professional-certified temporary disabilities, the card duration period is one year.
The duration period of your TAP card is based on your documentation of disability. TAP cards have a maximum duration period of five years.
Note: The standalone HCPC form is for online applicants only. If you are applying by mail, you must fill out the mail-in application, which includes a HCPC section.

Get a TAP CharlieCard
Once you’ve determined that you’re eligible, you’re ready to begin the application process. You can apply for or renew a card online, in person, or by mail.
As of Tuesday, September 5, 2023, the CharlieCard Store has been temporarily relocated to the State Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza.

Already applied and curious about your application status?
Once submitted, your application will be reviewed within 6 – 8 weeks. We will contact you if we are unable to approve your application.
To complete your application, you’ll need to upload three things:
- A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, or another government-issued photo ID. You can use an expired ID as long as the expiration date is within the last three years.
- A recent color photo of yourself. Your photo must be from the neck up in front of a solid, light-colored background. You cannot wear a hat, face covering, or sunglasses
- Documentation of disability as listed above.
You can choose to either receive your TAP CharlieCard in the mail or pick it up at the CharlieCard Store. If you choose to have it mailed, you will receive your card within two to four weeks after approval. If you choose to pick it up, we will contact you via phone or email with instructions.

Here’s what you'll need to be prepared with when you arrive:
- A completed TAP application in your preferred language (see below). You can download the application online and complete before you arrive or complete onsite.
- A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, or another government-issued photo ID. You can use an expired ID as long as the expiration date is within the last three years.
- Your documentation of disability as listed above or a completed, signed Health Care Professional Certification form (PART C of the TAP application).
- You’ll need to have your photo taken.
If you're automatically eligible, you’ll receive a temporary reduced fare CharlieCard, valid for use while you wait for your permanent TAP CharlieCard to arrive in the mail within 7 – 10 business days. All other applicants will receive a decision letter within 6 – 8 weeks.
If you receive an approval letter, please visit the CharlieCard Store to pick up a temporary reduced fare CharlieCard, valid for use while you wait for your permanent TAP CharlieCard to arrive in the mail within 7 – 10 business days.

How to Use Your TAP Card
You can load cash value and LinkPasses onto your TAP CharlieCard at:
- Fare vending machines
- The CharlieCard Store
- Retail sales locations
- Fare boxes on buses and trolleys at street-level stops (cash value and one-way fares only)
To pay your fare, simply tap your card on the fare target at any fare gate or onboard fare box.
Your TAP CharlieCard makes you eligible to purchase discounted Commuter Rail tickets and passes:
- On board (show your card to the conductor)
- At ticket windows (show your card to ticket window staff)
- At fare vending machines (tap your card to pay 50% of the standard one-way fare or purchase a monthly pass)
- Retail sales locations (show your card to the cashier)
- mTicket: Enter your card serial card number on the Reduced Fares page under the “My Account” section in your mTicket app. The reduced fare will then automatically appear when purchasing a ticket.
You can also show a TAP card from a Massachusetts Regional Transit Authority (RTA) or Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) for reduced Commuter Rail fares.
Your TAP CharlieCard makes you eligible to purchase discounted ferry tickets and passes:
- On board (show your card to the ticket agent or ferry official)
- At ticket windows (show your card to ticket agent)
- mTicket: Enter your card serial card number on the Reduced Fares page under the “My Account” section in your mTicket app. The reduced fare will then automatically appear.
Please note: The Salem ferry is operated seasonally by its municipality. Prices and discount options may vary depending on what time you take your trip.

All TAP cards come with an embedded microchip. To keep yours working properly, handle it with care. To prevent damage to the card:
- Do not punch holes in the card
- Do not bend or twist your card
- Do not insert it into any equipment. CharlieCards are meant to be tapped at fare gates, boxes and vending machines.
In the event of loss, theft, damage or renewal of your card, you can call 617-222-3200 to report it.
If you are given a temporary card, the renewal process should begin three months prior to the expiration date printed on the card.
Note: Reduced fare CharlieCards are not transferable and subject to applicable reduced fare regulations and conditions of use. Any violation of the rules will result in immediate confiscation.
