Winchester Center Station Accessibility Improvements

A rendering shows what Winchester Station will look like after accessibility improvements, with a new elevator, station signage, people in the parking lot, as viewed from the from the Aberjona parking lot.

Due to safety concerns, Winchester Center station was closed for repairs in 2021. The station—which had not had a major update since the 1950s—was in a state of disrepair and did not meet current accessibility standards.

We are giving the station a complete renovation that will include structural repairs to improve safety, accessibility, and station capacity. We have demolished the old Winchester Center station and are beginning construction on a new station this spring.

  • Construction contract awarded: 2021
  • Construction start: Spring 2022
  • Projected completion: Partial Opening Fall 2024; Fully Open Winter 2024
  • Budget: $50 million
  • Status: Construction

Project Features

To bring Winchester Center station up to date and make it accessible, we will install new high-level platforms that allow for easy boarding. The platforms will also accommodate longer, nine-car trains to increase station capacity. Additional updates include the following:

  • Reconstructing access ramps and adding new elevators for better accessibility
  • Upgrading canopies, signs, railings, and lighting for safety and security
  • Adding benches, bike racks, a public address system, and other amenities for comfort and convenience
  • Updating walkways, sidewalks, and parking lot areas

Service Alerts

During construction, Winchester Center station on the Lowell Line will be closed until further notice. Riders should consider Wedgemere as an alternative to Winchester since trains will not be stopping at the station.

On-site preparation for construction began during the week of March 28, 2022. Construction began on June 30, 2022.
