Major Wellington Yard and Maintenance Facility Improvements Underway

We’re making progress on major infrastructure upgrades to the Wellington Yard and Maintenance Facility, where we store and care for Orange Line vehicles each day. These upgrades will help us bring the new Orange Line fleet into service and will make it faster, safer, and easier to work on the vehicles.
We’re working on the yard and facility separately, and we’re doing the work in phases so they can remain in service during construction.
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Wellington Yard Rebuild: 25% Complete
So far, we’ve:
- Begun concrete work for the foundation of the new circuit breaker house that will supply power to the yard and duct bank work to consolidate cabling
- Conducted preliminary testing and made repairs to the drainage system
- Started installing new tracks in 1 out of 7 rail yard zones
What’s Next
Throughout 2020, we’ll be working on other improvements in the yard:
- New rail yard tracks, power systems, and signals
- Standardized special track for easier yard maintenance
- New wireless technology that will support a remote, early-warning diagnostics and alert system
Wellington Maintenance Facility: 71% Complete
So far, we’ve:
- Installed 4 new bridge cranes and a vehicle hoist for safer, more efficient vehicle repair work
- Replaced the roof of the facility
- Constructed a new building addition with a catwalk that will support maintenance and storage of the new and expanded Orange Line fleet (to be completed in winter 2020)
What’s Next
Throughout 2020, we’ll be working on other improvements in the facility:
- An efficient, environmentally friendly train wash station
- More storage and maintenance space
- A brand new service bay that will increase capacity
- ADA-accessible crew quarters
We look forward to the role these upgrades will play in bringing the new Orange Line fleet into service and keeping them maintained.
