Overnight Work in Newton Starts April 8

Updated on May 22, 2019

Overnight work on the D Branch between Riverside and Newton Highlands begins Monday, April 8, 2019. Work will continue through July 5, 2019 on weeknights.

On May 30, 2019, crews will begin rail replacement work along the tracks near Waban. This work is expected to continue on and off during overnight hours through late June. While this rail replacement work will not occur on nights when there are Red Sox home games, other night work will occur.

What to Expect if You Live in the Neighborhood

Crews will work in up to 3 locations each night, and some of this work will be noisy, including when they cut the rails with a saw or torch, and tamp the track to the proper elevation.

We do what we can to minimize noise disruptions, including:

  • Assembling track panels off-site
  • Accessing work sites through the MBTA right of way
  • Using self-adjusting backup alarms, silencers, or mufflers on equipment
  • Limiting truck and equipment idling
  • Lining dumping buns, hoppers, and trucks with sound-deadening material
  • Using noise blankets and shielding where possible

Noise levels are monitored monthly, and we respond to all noise complaints. If you would like to report a noise issue, call the 24/7 hotline at 508-676-3550.
