Canopies Installed for Columbus Avenue Bus Lanes
Updated on August 12, 2021
In partnership with the City of Boston, the MBTA is making improvements to Columbus Avenue that will benefit bus riders, pedestrians, and the neighborhood as a whole.
We anticipate the new center-running bus lanes will begin operating this fall.

Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Completed Work
Crews have made significant progress this summer on the Columbus Avenue Bus Lanes Project, and the canopies for the new bus boarding platforms are now complete.
Upcoming Work
Crews will work Mondays through Fridays from approximately 6 AM to 5 PM each day.
Upcoming work includes:
- Milling and paving the center-running bus lanes
- Reconstructing sidewalk
- Installing digital screens and emergency call boxes
The work schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change without notice.
Service Impacts
Due to the work on Columbus Ave, stops may be temporarily relocated or closed through fall 2021. Please follow the posted signs for temporary stop locations and nearest connection points.
Neighborhood Impacts
For safety reasons, there may be occasional lane reductions, parking space removals, and minor detours for pedestrians around work zones.
Entrances to properties in the work zone may be temporarily adjusted. However, our goal is to maintain access for businesses and private properties at all times.
